[ Souji watches Mary approach the machine of mole death with open amusement on his face. Which immediately turns to surprise as the mole(???) lunges up shrieking and Mary responds with the sort of violence he hadn't actually expected her to have. ]
[ But is way impressed that she does! He didn't scream like her, but his hand did jump to the hilt of his sword. Look.... can you blame him. He comes closer, hand still on the hilt just in case a mole game in a CERES carnival means infinite moles popping up to attack them. ]
That was a good hit. Did you kill it?
[ Souji asks, despite the fact that it's whack-a-mole.... not kill-the-mole.... but then the second one comes lunging out -- ]
[ Mary's mole nightmares are becoming realized, that's why. ]
[ Thankfully, the mole that tries to bite Mary's hand comes to a swift end by the sword. Souji might not be as fast as Saitou on the draw, but having his hand on the hilt of his sword helped a lot... The carnie responsible for this terrible game raises up a cry at seeing Souji kill the mole, but Souji ignores him. ]
[ Why? Because he's going to team up with Mary right now to destroy all these moles, that's why. ]
Calm down. [ EVEN IF KILLER MOLES ARE TRYING TO GET THEM ] Just hit what you can and I'll take care of the rest.
[ time to traumatize mary even further by stabbing these moles, apparently ]
[ What does it say about Souji, who would never strike Lili, but would have no problem with killing her if he had to? Fucked up standards, that's what. Still, she doesn't flinch, so he doesn't know that he's coming off as more hostile than he should really be. He's fine with being called a liar, he's not sure if he'd care if Lili did think he was a coward, as long as she didn't tell. That was the whole point, wasn't it? He doesn't relax his hands. Instead, he looks at her and searches for a reason that would work. ]
You can think of it as pride then.
[ he says, referring back to what she said earlier. The reason behind why he doesn't want people to know is pride, partly. The other is because he can't entertain the notion of being thought of as less, because that's all he had in the end. ]
I'm not sick or weak, so I don't want anyone to think that of me.
[ that's all, he silently adds. Maybe if he says it enough times, he can even fool himself. ]
But no, she's just going to pass her judgment as she sees fit. Pride is something that she's familiar with herself, but she can't imagine refusing to sacrifice her own health for the sake of her pride.
(She doesn't seem to realize that if she was talking to anyone else anywhere else - in a place where death is permanent or to someone who would be more prone to sudden violence - she would definitely be facing the consequences to her health because of her pride and refusal to back down.)]
You're too defensive about this. It makes it very hard to believe you, you know. Is the truth so horrible that you can't even tell me?
[ It's only by the strength of how much Souji respects Kondou-san that his hand is staying away from his blade at all in this moment. She's like a dog with a bone, he thinks, because for some damned reason she's not letting this go at all. What is he supposed to do? (tell her the truth, souji, duh) Kill her? He can't. She wasn't an enemy of the Shinsengumi. Thoughts fly through his mind, but not one sticks. Hijikata-san would know what to do, wouldn't he, the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi with a diplomat's tongue. Maybe Souji should take page out of the demon vice-commander's book. The only problem was which page? Actually, what was the point of wondering what Hijikata-san would do when Souji wouldn't be able to do anything he could do in the first place? ]
[ souji internally screaming tbh... This would be much easier if he had a softer, more bendable nature. If he was Heisuke, easily scolded, or Saitou, quiet and logical. Or even Shinpachi, who'd probably hang his head and mutter a quick apology. But he's not any of these people. He's too stubborn, and yes prideful, to lose face here. So it's with gritted teeth that he manages to eke out the words - ]
If you think this is me being defensive, then that's because you haven't been listening at all.
[ how many times does he have to scream "i'm not sick, honest" without resorting to jazz sword hands ]
But you want the truth? [ he can be honest. ] Fine. It's because it's not any of your goddamned business.
[ look so what if souji has shitty taste buds.... ]
[ 'But you'd be dead by then, so it's not like you'd know, Hajime-kun' -- is on the tip of his tongue, but he swallows it back in favor of surprise at what Yuri says next. Not about the food. He hasn't actually talked about the Shinsengumi with anyone, not even with Kashuu or Yamato or with the other Okitas, much less anyone who was from a future where the Shinsengumi was a thing of the past and had told him as such. Mary had said that she had learned about them, but he figured it was something Sousei, who didn't seem like he'd been from Souji's future, just taught her about because it was a Thing to Know. Places that were preserved? How long had it been if things about the Shinsengumi were preserved? ]
[ It's not like he believed everyone he met was from the same time as him, of course not. But he never put the Shinsengumi in the context of a time where it didn't exist anymore, much less a time where it was famous. Sometimes it's nice to live in Souji's world -- a world where he only cared about the Shinsengumi as he knew it. ]
Popular?
[ He trains his look of surprise on Yuri, then up to Saitou to gauge his response. Because surely he's not the only one who's Shocked and having some kind of timeline crisis here, right?! ]
[ Kaoru about to kill Souji, but is at least talking quietly... lord. But it’ll probably work in this case since Souji looks like some axe murderer trying to murder Kaoru for no reason. A crazy axe murderer, because there’s a smile on Souji’s face that only grows sharper at Kaoru’s words. He doesn’t bother replying. He’s ascending to a higher plane of existence where only murder losers inhabit. ]
[ His sword flies out to meet Kaoru’s head-on. It’s a definite change compared to the last time he met Kaoru, the last time with blood choking his mouth and his sword fumbling from his grip. He can fight this time. He can fight without worrying that his body won’t last (it won’t in the end, he knows, but it will for now) and if he dies, so what? He’ll have his sword in hand hopefully shoved through Kaoru’s heart, even if Kaoru’s cleaves him in half like an apple. ]
[ Still, Kaoru has a definite edge over him in strength and speed, which makes things both troublesome and exhilarating for Souji. He hasn’t had a worthwhile opponent in ages – someone he really wants to kill -- yuri was fine and yamato was tougher, but Souji had held back in both of those cases. ]
[ Now? His eyes have a red sheen to them and his hair turns white, because going full rasetsu in public is apparently something he doesn’t mind at all. Not if it means getting to stab Kaoru. Which he tries to do once more, this time slashing towards Kaoru’s neck. ]
[The primary flaw in Kaoru's personal style is his willingness to really throw himself into the fray, which can be harmful at best and deadly at worst. He gets a little too close to his opponents because it's not like most injuries will be enough to take him down, and it's not like he's particularly susceptible to pain in the first place. Far from it, really.
So when the air shifts and becomes static with killing intent, Kaoru's instinct isn't to flit away contrary to how often he usually turns tail. Instead, he's rushing forward, rushing right into the arc of Souji's blade and only dodging enough so that it shaves into the side of his neck rather than cuts through it completely. There's blood, of course, but that doesn't stop him--
It's his primary strength too, really.
His willingness to throw himself directly at his opponents gives him an edge in most cases, because it lets him in close enough to really do some damage. His arm is pulling his blade back and whipping out again like the tail of a scorpion, aiming for Souji's side.
Someone wants to draw this out, apparently... It's been a really long time since he's drawn blood? HE NEEDS HIS STAB QUOTA.]
[ SLOW DOWN THERE MCSTABBITY which means no, don’t slow down at all, because this is the most alive Souji’s ever felt since arriving in Cerealia. The consternation Souji should feel at seeing Kaoru barrel towards him like a speeding bullet doesn’t actually register. In fact, he’s already exhilarated at seeing blood, despite how fleeting the wound may be. Blood from an enemy, which usually meant he was winning. (And a smaller, more savage part of him that speeds up his pulse at the sight of it) ]
[ And then Kaoru’s blade comes lashing out at a speed Souji’s still not used to and effectively cuts into his side. Souji whirls away at the last moment to avoid a fatal wound, but the strike still lands. And blood still spills. ]
[ His wound automatically heals, but the stain on his haori remains. Souji merely readjusts his grip on his sword and runs right in to meet Kaoru head-on. The insignificant strike Souji landed on Kaoru’s neck wasn’t enough. It was barely anything. Souji shifts, then lunges forward with his sandanzuki technique. Entirely predictable, considering how often he used it, but why not use a good thing? Especially if it meant MORE STABBINGS. ]
[ Souji finally spares a glance when Vietnam shouts back at him, taking note of how she dives and shouts, and then immediately redirects his attention back to the elephant. He finally slashes the tendons of the back leg, dives and does the same to the front. ]
[ So now, the elephant that was so incensed by Vietnam, teeters to the side and loses its balance, finally crashing to the floor. (and hopefully not on Vietnam) ]
[ Souji takes the opportunity given to him by climbing on up and then sinking his blade straight through the skull of one head. Then he speedily moves on to do the same to the next two... The elephant isn't exactly flailing anymore, though it does kick its remaining legs weakly....... until Souji delivers what he hopes is FINALLY the death blow. ]
No thankfully she is alive, just a little way away from a huge elephant body. It was a good view for when Souji went to deliver the finishing blow(s), just as she backed away just in case. Backing away, but ready to lunge forward should he need her to.
[ Souji prods the hopefully dead body with his foot. Seeing as the elephant doesn't rear up to snap him up in one of its mouths... He flicks his blade to the side to get rid of the blood, then turns to Vietnam. ]
That took longer than I liked. [ dryly ] But you weren't half bad at distracting it.
[ nailed it indeed. the elephant doesn't burst into sparkles like a jrpg but it doesn't turn into dust either. instead, it just dies. instantaneously. the combined force of two killing strikes was enough to wipe it out, three heads and all. ]
[ Souji stares down at it, making sure it's dead and not about to sprout another elephant head like some kind of demented hydra, then examines the killing wound dealt by Yuri. ]
Not bad.
[ As much as the prideful part of him would have liked to have killed it on his own, it was an elephant. souji's never seen one. this was a New Experience. He flicks his blade to the side to get rid of elephant blood, then looks up at Yuri. ]
You weren't totally useless at distracting it either. [ a better, more socially adept man would say thanks here. ]
[it's fine, at least yuri's not the most socially adept himself, so he doesn't take offense to it. souji just seems like that kind of guy, so he just arches a brow and smirks.]
Guess my magic light things come in handy sometimes. [yeah, he'll be an asshole about it. repede's a bit of a show-off too, so while yuri is picking up his sheath from wherever the hell it went flying, the dog is doing a backflip before letting out a howl and sheathing his dagger.
he's not into being ignored for his efforts. yuri didn't do all the work here, after all.]
[ Souji looks at him at that... but seeing as Yuri's too much of a punk to give him the right name, he'll just settle for magic light things. ]
[ He looks down at Repede, ah. ]
But you were pretty impressive. [ This is his first time seeing Repede in action.... also the first time he's seen a dog fight with a dagger....... That calls for some actual words of praise. ] More than the magic lights, at least.
[ Souji will embrace that compliment too, even if he's totally aware that Ruby has a giant scythe that is also a gun and can magically summon rose petals. ]
You're right, but they look a little plain next to your scythe.
[ he's going to leave the friend-making to Saitou, alright?! Souji looks faintly surprised with the way Shigeru responds (by text???). He looks at Saitou then back at Shigeru. ]
They don't? Is that just a guess or...?
[ look, a lot of things don't look unsafe in CERES....... ]
[ Souji sends him a sharp look at that, then back to the peacock elephant. He's not exactly sure what's going on here. Maybe the tsukumogami's just really tired? Or maybe he just really doesn't want to fight? Either way -- ]
If that's how you feel, then get out of here. Or you'll just be in the way.
[ And he dashes forward to meet the elephant mid-way, sword aloft, twisting out of the way just before impact and slashing deeply into one of its front legs ]
[ Ugh Sooj, you're just like Yams in that way. Kousetsu can't in good conscious just leave the other here to fight this monster himself, even if inwardly he really doesn't want to fight. But of course he will because it means protecting Kashuu and Yamatonokami's master then he will do it, however unwilling he might be. ]
I will not leave to fight this yourself, Okita-san. Kashuu-san would be angry if I did such a thing.
[ He'll draw his sword then as he dashes forward, light and deadly as he strikes the underside of the beast before darting out between its front and back legs before it has a chance to step on him. ]
[ Souji immediately follows, circling around and diving under so he can do the same. Once he pops back out from under the elephant, he shoots Kousetsu a quick, irritated glare. ]
Then you can tell him that it’s none of his business.
[ as far as Souji’s concerned, no one had a reason or a right to be worried over his well-being. It’s not like he asked for that kind of concern. Even if he is totally ready to take on a giant peacock elephant all by his lonesome. Still, now that Kousetsu’s joined the fight, Souji presses forward to take advantage of the opening made by the sword. ]
